Today, the Virgin Islands honored a true pillar of our community, Mrs. Claire Roker, with the naming of the Frederiksted Pier Visitor Center in her honor. Known to many as Auntie Claire, Queen Mother of Pageants, or the Mayor of Frederiksted, she is a shining example of what it means to serve your community with all her heart, nerve, and sinew.
What I admire most is her honesty. Auntie Claire never hesitates to pull me aside or call me up, offer real feedback, and remind me when I can do better. That kind of honesty comes from a deep place of care for all of us. She has mentored and inspired countless Virgin Islanders through her work in tourism, board service, and her unwavering commitment to Frederiksted.
When we talk about people who have truly served their community, those whose stories should be taught to students now, not years from now, Mrs. Roker stands at the top of the list. I’m humbled to walk in her footsteps and grateful for all she’s given, and continues to give, to Frederiksted and the Virgin Islands.
Thank you to the 35th Legislature and executive branch employees for making sure Mrs. Roker received her flowers today, while she can enjoy them. Let’s all remember to celebrate our heroes while they’re here.
