AI is powerful, but it depends entirely on the quality of your input and your ability to guide it.
The best coders wonât be replaced by AI. Theyâll be the ones who know how to use it better than anyone else.
Iâve always been a coder. My journey started on an Apple IIe in elementary school, creating simple block games, and continued on my Commodore 64c at home, where I built games by expanding on code I found in computer magazines. Fast forward nearly four decades, and itâs incredible to see how far technology has come.
Today, AI has transformed the way we build software. It doesnât remove all the challenges, but it makes the process faster, more accessible, and in many cases, more enjoyable. I use AI in a few key ways. The first is to generate or modify blocks of code while I multitask â whether Iâm responding to emails, grabbing lunch, or leading a meeting. The second is to review and refine my own code, finding ways to improve efficiency, reduce redundancy, and push the boundaries of whatâs possible. I still write to deepen my understanding. The third is to evaluate the work of others, because real growth comes from helping others master the craft themselves.
There's an old saying that's still true today: garbage in, garbage out. AI is powerful, but it depends entirely on the quality of your input and your ability to guide it. It makes mistakes, sometimes repeats them, and occasionally misunderstands intent. Thatâs why AI doesnât replace coders; it amplifies those who understand the craft. It rewards curiosity, discipline, and the ability to see beyond the syntax. The ones who thrive arenât just good at writing code. They are great at asking questions, thinking in systems, and knowing when to let AI assist versus when to take the reins themselves.
The future of coding isnât about man or machine. The future will be about partnership and how well we learn to think, design, and build with AI to create solutions that are faster, smarter, and more human. My work has evolved from writing code to helping organizations harness their power. Leadership today isnât about doing all the work yourself; itâs about understanding whatâs possible and guiding others to achieve it.
